Alen Nsambu (he/they, b. 1998) is Finnish-Angolan choreographer and performer based, influencing and working between Helsinki and Copenhagen. They pursued interest towards dance and choreography at Den Danske Scenekunstskolen with Rasmus Ölme as head of program. Nsambu graduated with a BFA degree in Dance and Choreography in July 2022.
Nsambu's artistic interests lie at the intersections of choreography, performance art, and theatrical registers. Questions related to ecology of the marginalized, playfulness and autofiction are relevant to his artistic work. Nsambu has worked internationally with artists such as Marie Topp (DK), Miles Greenberg (US), Fallon Mayanja (FR), Sonya Lindfors (FI), Renan Martins de Oliveira (BR), Sheena McGrandles (UK) and Ima Iduozee (FI).
Nsambu was selected to be one of the Generation2023 artists for the triennial exhibition curated for Amos Rex museum in Helsinki. Together with Ritni Pieski they formed Nsambu&Pieski collective, and choreographed a performative work titled “this is an invitation”. The work criticized western behavioral and structural norms within the museum institution and premiered in August 2023 in Amos Rex, Helsinki. The piece received an acclaimed response from the public as well as from the museum curators.
Nsambu has worked diversely as a performer. Besides the working as a freelancer on the contemporary dance field, they have worked in bigger theather institutions suchas Helsinki City Theater (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), Turku City Theater (Cabaret) and Savoy Theater (West Side Story).
Nsambu has also worked with TV and film with productions such as LUUSERIT/LOSERS (S3, Anna Paavilainen) and Täydellinen Joulu/The Perfect Christmas (Taru Mäkelä).
